What causes swirl marks on car paint?

Swirl marks are fine circular scratches that become visible under sunlight or strong lighting. They are usually caused by repeated contact with dirt during washing and drying.

Common causes

  • Automatic brush car washes
  • Dirty wash mitts and sponges
  • One-bucket washing
  • Dry wiping dusty paint
  • Poor-quality drying towels
  • Polishing with contaminated pads

How to reduce new marks

Use a proper pre-wash, clean wash media, separate wheel tools and safe drying methods. Never wipe dry dust from the paint.

Can swirl marks be removed?

Light swirls can often be improved with machine polishing. Deeper scratches may need paint correction or may not be safely removable. Wax can temporarily hide some marks but does not permanently correct them.
