What machine polishing is

Machine polishing uses a powered rotary or dual-action machine with a pad and abrasive product to refine paint. The result depends on paint hardness, defect depth, pad, polish, machine movement, pressure, speed and working time.

Preparation

Wash, chemical decontamination and clay treatment where needed come before polishing. Sensitive trim and vulnerable edges may be masked.

Rotary and dual-action machines

Rotary machines provide direct rotation and can cut quickly in skilled hands. Dual-action machines combine rotation with an orbital movement and are widely used for controlled correction and finishing. Neither machine is automatically safe without correct technique.

Pads and abrasive products

Foam, microfibre and wool pads have different cutting and finishing behaviour. Compounds remove defects more quickly; finishing polishes refine haze and improve clarity. Product systems should be used according to manufacturer instructions.

One-stage polishing

One-stage polishing aims for a balanced visual improvement in one main machine step. It is suitable when the goal is stronger gloss and reduction of lighter defects rather than maximum correction.

Multi-stage polishing

A cutting stage is followed by refining when deeper correction is justified. The added stages require more time and remove more paint, so the decision must be condition-led.

Working method

A test spot is completed first. The pad is kept controlled and generally flat, sections are worked systematically, residue is removed and the result is inspected before continuing.

Limits and risks

Polishing can cause haze, holograms, edge damage or excess clear-coat removal when the combination or technique is unsuitable. Paint failure and deep damage require repair, not more polishing.
